    A once fast lady

    is about to be evicted

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The SS United States, a historic ship that still holds the transatlantic speed record it set more than 70 years ago, must leave its berth on the Delaware River in Philadelphia by Sept. 12, a federal judge says.

The decision issued Friday by U.S. District Judge Anita Brody culminated a years-old rent dispute between the conservancy that oversees the 1,000-foot ocean liner and its landlord, Penn Warehousing. It stemmed from an August 2021 decision by Penn Warehousing to double the ship’s daily dockage to $1,700, an increase the conservancy refused to accept.

As a 4 year old, I was brought to see her pierside in Norfolk.. adults were impressed.. I was hoping for an ice cream stop on the way home..

Now.. she is just. a large beautiful, expensive, white elephant..

Maybe that’s just the philistine in me talking..

$1,700 per day equals $620,500 a year. That does seem to be on the expensive side. Perhaps there are other financial charges for services rolled in there we don't know about?

It would be interesting to know what her expected useful life was by the original owners and compare that to the current crop of mega cruise ships of today. My guess is the current crop are far more expendable than those of the United States era.

Just a personal thing but I look at those mega ships and it gives me the chills

you would never get me on a cruise ship. I don't drink and I hate crowds of any sort. I would be bored to death after a day. now give me a 90 foot sailing yacht cruising from dive site to dive site and I would be all over that

I'm with you but it wouldn't take a day.

I would agree as far as the "big" players go but not for those like Viking. What they don't have is a casino, climbing wall, crowds, waiting lines, water parks, and kids.

What those like Viking do have is quiet enjoyment of life with a dress code, multiple excellent restaurants, no crowds, live music through out the day, entertainment options in the evening, history lectures (by a retired NYC professor who was excellent), ports of call talks and afternoon tea.

I cannot fail to mention the crew---they are exceptionally well trained and extremely gracious and helpful in every way. Just a quick story from a previous river cruise on Viking: we had a wonderful young lady from Romania as a state room steward. One morning my wife went back for something and she was sitting on the floor of the shower cleaning the grout lines in the tile with a tooth brush

Not wanting to sound uppity, but it is a more refined and quite enjoyable.

We are planning an Alaskan passage and that will probably be it other than a couple river cruises we want to do but neither of those compare to the cattle call cruises... We took a family cruise to the VI and actually spent a couple days on the boat at port in order to enjoy the quiet. A balcony room is a MUST. on days we did get off the ship all the tourist went left at he end of the pier , we went right and got lost in the town....

My wife is on a cruise at this moment. She just called me from Honduras where she has spent the day playing with sloths, monkeys and parrots. I was tempted to go but when she informed me they were going to be 18 family members in a group going well I just opted out.........

We did the inside passage on Holland America---before they were bought out. I was not impressed and the crowning touch was when we got to the point with the highest chance of seeing whales it was dinner time and they never even slowed down----I was on deck looking for whales---the hell with dinner

Another advantage of a ship with less than 1,000 passengers and one with 6-7,000 is the havoc it causes at small ports of call---they swamp the town!

All Viking ocean cruise ships have only outside cabins and all have balconies.

If I ever take a cruise again it will be on an upscale ship and will be all inclusive, and I mean ALL inclusive.
