The ones that would really get burned at the stake would be Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll, the originators of the characters...Both were white, and played the parts in films in blackface......

Nick Stewart, who played the part of Lightnin' had his own theater in Harlem...Tim Moore had already retired from a career in the theater when he was coaxed back to acting as the Kingfish...Spencer Williams' career as an actor, producer and director was always overshadowed by his role as Andrew Hogg Brown...But my favorite character will always be Algonquin J. Calhoun, played by Johnny Lee......Ben

Comedy and what is and is not acceptable today is not the only change in Harlem. Harlem has largely become "gentrified"----and much "paler" in color. There are still some pockets that you might not want to walk the streets at night but far less. Also, part of Harlem is now Spanish Harlem and if you aren't multi-lingual you will have a difficult time getting along there---it is every bit as Spanish as Miami.
