Wifey and I, after traveling a bit, have taken to calling the toilet a Water Closet. It makes as much sense as calling it a Bathroom (though there often is no bath in it).

A friend of mine who spent much time in Germany often took associates with him. Often those associates were making their first international trip. He would coach them at the beginning of their trip with handy things they might need---including the signs on toilet doors: Herren and Damen. He would offer an easy way to remember which is which---the men's room is "da men" and ladies---"her ren". He was often surprised by how long it took some of them to find out they had been "had"----the correct term is reversed

In a lot of states in the United States it doesn't matter. It's open season on whichever one you want to go in.

Outside of large Italian cities, men's toilets are often out in the open. And, while standing & relieving yourself in the men's room, it's considered fine if a woman mops up around your feet.
