My first visit to London was flying in on a prop plane, low and slow. On the outskirts of the city were an impressive number of bomb craters left from WWII. It made me realize how much stress and anxiety the folks that lived there endured. The Luftwaffe was relentless, overwhelming Brit defenses.
These weren't simply military targets being hit. The German leadership wanted the Brits to lose hope and experience loss. It was meant to break them. Fortunately, the opposite happened. Brits came together and persevered at a level not always seen during conflict.
