    Silent death...

It goes both ways for those "still on patrol"...I've read much of USS Growler (SS-215), but I don't remember ever writing much about the service of this vessel and its crew...Even though his words were spoken to honor the service of those fallen elsewhere, Fleet Admiral Nimitz's expression of uncommon valor being a common virtue was never better exemplified than by the officers and men of Growler......Ben

The Wikipedia article has a good pic of the bent prow. It's amazing she made it back to port.

They were designed with that in mind apparently...Several warships lost their bows entirely, and survived...The Queen Mary struck the British cruiser HMS Curacao amidships cutting the warship in half without even realizing it...The passenger ship was repaired in port by filling the bow with concrete after which it resumed its duty as a troop transport......Ben

Some of this history of innovation in a time of war can be read in "Frankenships"...At other times the enemy is the seaman's even older adversary - the weather - with results just as potentially deadly......Ben

Kudos, Ben. Quite the history and quite the thread.
