    Not to worry---we are safe!

My wife is very close to one of her cousins who lives in Fl. The night before the storm was due she called her to ask if they were going to leave their barrier island home---and got the usual no, despite an evacuation order---we will be fine

They live in a house on high piers with an elevator from the ground floor garage to the house above. They have a generator, also on piers next to the house.

Long story short---they are now in need of a new car, it was parked down stairs, floating in 4 feet of salt water

Understandable. I'd want to stay too - yet doing so endangers First Responders attempting to do their jobs.

An aside: After these events occur with vehicles, some of them will resurface at used car lots. They can have extensive hidden water damage, making them a PITA & costly to repair.

Interestingly, Florida police are giving advice to those who don’t evacuate - using a permanent marker, write your name on a few body parts so we can identify you when you are dead.

The police should hand out markers, it might drive the point home.
The insurance company has said they have to see the car to verify condition before they can close. Next problem, the bridge to the mainland is still closed.

For now they are busy with mud everywhere in the garage.

There was a "car scandal" after Sandy. I don't recall all the details but many thousands of cars totaled by the insurance companies for emersion damage ended up on the old Grumman airport on Long Island. This video details what happened to at least 100,000 "totaled" cars---and the buyers that were screwed. You will see the airport full of cars and then like magic they all went away

My wife's cousin's car is a Porsche SUV---I'm sure that will be a prime candidate for a "miraculous" rebirth

Not entirely Ben. When it comes to beach front property the richest live the closest to the water---and get wacked the hardest. Not to sound callous but I can't fathom why anyone needs to be "next to the water" at all costs.
