Dave should come on and describe the second week adventures soon. Bet he can move the leg somewhat forward and back, I'd guess about 30% or so by now. Always fun when they pull it up more and ask you to hold it and then push it backwards and hold it.

I remember getting to bicycle about the third week or so.

Ben let me know what VA bennies are available? All I care about is the burial things.

Re: Veterans Administration, I went to the VA a little over a year ago because I heard hearing aids were free. I had just been quoted $ 8,000.00 to replace my five year old aids!
First you have to have a copy of your DD214 discharge paper. I applied on line only to find that my records had been transferred to the National Archives and a fire in 1997 had turned them all to ashes! I had to submit as much info as I had, including induction date, discharge date, draft board number, etc. then hope for the best.

After a couple of months I got a copy of my DD214 And was able to apply for benefit

In order to see an audiologist I had to first see a primary care doc and have a physical exam then be recommended to the audiologist. Finally I did see an audiologist and got my hearing aids.

I will say this about the VA, First, everyone was so helpful and friendly I couldn't believe it. It's a big sprawling hospital and easy to get lost but the people there went out if their way to be helpful. The prescription services are great. My doc prescribed me Tylenol for my knee pain and next thing eight 100 pill bottles showed up in the mail!

All in all it's a great deal if you're qualified. I should have done it earlier.

    Valuable discussion guys

It seems funny that I want to talk about great progress seems so very mundane. As an example, I lifted my foot off the bed, for the first time! I walked 35' with the walker in one shot. I am not allowed to but can get out of bed, with the walker go to the bathroom, use the toilet and getback to bed! Those all become milestones when none were possible yesterday.

    Yep, indeed valuable info.

I like what I'm hearing about the VA and allied services. We're all part of the "Graying of America" wherein services to seniors will occur at a higher rate unseen before in our history.

My wife did a review of benefits and eligibility for me some years ago and came up dry. After comments in this thread I am thinking that it's time for a fresh review

Haven't used our local VA simply due to distance. The main site is 20 miles away on the opposite side of our valley. I did spend some time there liaisoning with them during internships and was impressed by their professionalism, particularly how thorough they were.

    From the world of rehab:
Today I saw a man dragging a clam on a leash
It must be hard to walk with a pulled muscle

I never understood the adage, "Happy as a clam." Being a cold, slimy, bottom-dwelling bivalve waiting for a walrus to scarf me down is not an experience I'd seek.

Big day today, lots of walking with the walker and another milestone, I did steps for the first time. On the down side this was a high pain today. I'm still icing my knee now.
I think I can see the end of rehab next week.

My “good memory “ of rehab is the first time that I got my geezer self, by myself with no help or “guidance, into the shower and was sitting on a stool (walker parked just outside).. I was in my own shower and in control and clean.. as the hot water ran over me (over my head, I was sitting) I realized that I was now in control and it was only going to get better..

You will be there sooner than you think..

I like that positive view regarding the healing process.

Showering was something I struggled with during my rehab. Nurses directed and actively participated in showering me in the hospital setting. I realized how effective they were at it and struggled to do it on my own after my discharge. Previously, I enjoyed showering and stepping out of the shower feeling revived. After being the hospital for two months I'd step out of the shower at home feeling exhausted. It wasn't because I was working too hard cleaning myself. It was because I was so tense and agitated. Got over it in the next several months - but now shower half as much as I used to do.
