When my family lived in Cameron Park CA we had a German family living behind us. About once a week there'd be what I considered to be an awful smell coming from their house. Told my parents about it and they explained what Sauerkraut is.
But, once I was on my own and ran across it, it was love at first bite (couldn't resist). I've reached the point now wherein I don't want a hotdog unless there's Kraut on it.
