I notice even the great Duke Ellington only hit a few opening keys, then wisely sat back and just listened......Ben

I was letting Mahalia Jackson play in the background---until this came on

Ms Jackson was having a bad hair day but this turns into a real classic. It was recorded at the 1970 Newport Jazz Festival.

I have long admired the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and my years in Utah only served to heighten my admiration of them. The annual Pioneer Day (a State holiday) celebration commemorates the entry of Brigham Young and the first group of Mormon pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847.

It is always the occasion of a day and evening of music from the choir and orchestra of the Mormon Tabernacle. I invite you to listen to part or all of the 2015 concert which begins with the orchestra performing the theme from The Magnificent Seven.

An incredibly interesting insight into the art of Philip Quast.

And speaking of Philip Quast and Les Miserables, here is a sterling version of that remarkable musical show, not fully staged but presented in more or less concert form with all the songs sung by an all star cast who previously starred in the long-running production at one time or another. If you saw the movie and were disappointed with the voice quality of the players, then this is the show for you. All of these singers are wonderful. I have the Blu-ray Disc and it is excellent. Can't believe the entire thing is on YouTube for free.

I also have that album on disc and now it is available for free download on Amazon Prime---it is my all time favorite musical.

We had mentioned emotional music recently. Yesterday after finishing working I sat back and played music that I selected rather than what came up in rotation. One was the Epilogue (Finale) from Les Miserables. I could not guess how many times I have heard but not truly listened---yesterday I truly listened and it was another gut punch.

Chill-bumps do not lie, and I was covered with them.

Here's one to bring the two together exquisitely — Les Miserables & the Mormon Tabernacle Choir And Orchestra — performing "Bring Him Home."

I often listen to that---Alfie Boe has an incredible voice.

I would always try to watch their concerts (which were televised) while I lived in Utah. There is also a Baroque Ensemble.

It has to be a great thrill for all the members of the choir as well as the orchestra to be able to perform with artists of the caliber of Alfie Boe.
It is hard for me to imagine they are all "armatures"---what the hell happened to me I'm the only guy I know that ever got booed at a Japanese Karaoke club

Henry Mancini was one of the best. He often used the bass flute in his arrangements, which is a wonderful instrument very seldom heard elsewhere. Loved his stuff.

I had most, if not all, of his albums on vinyl and then replaced them on CD----and now have my third set, a digital collection on the cloud.
