    Good bye Renee Fleming.

    From this mornings NYT:
Richard Strauss’s opera “Der Rosenkavalier” is about the passage of time. It’s the story of a wealthy married woman, the Marschallin, who is having an affair with a much younger man, and who realizes that she is getting older and that he will sooner or later move on. Her most famous aria, at the end of the first act, is about wanting to stop the clocks. At the end of the opera, to music so full of feeling Strauss wanted it played at his own funeral, she accepts the inevitable and graciously surrenders her lover to a younger woman.

Robert Carsen’s new staging of “Rosenkavalier,” which had its debut in London this winter and opens at the Metropolitan Opera on Thursday, April 13, emphasizes the theme of change and upheaval by moving the setting from 18th-century Vienna to the moment when the piece was written, at the twilight of the Hapsburg Empire and the eve of World War I. It becomes an opera about the end of an era, or even the end of the world.

For Renée Fleming, the superstar soprano who will sing the Marschallin at the Met, and for music, this really is the end of an era: This “Rosenkavalier” may well be her farewell to staged opera. She will sing her final performance on the afternoon of Saturday, May 13.

People who know Ms. Fleming, 58, say that she has been planning this moment for years. The novelist Ann Patchett, who became friends with her after finishing “Bel Canto,” about a diva with many Fleming-like traits, said recently: “For as long as I’ve known Renée, the thing she always talks about is the fact that it’s all going to end. She has always had this feeling: ‘I’m a carton of yogurt with an expiration date stamped on it, and that day will come and I’ll be thrown out.’”

So Ms. Fleming is trying to say goodbye on her own terms. “You don’t want people to be saying, ‘Oh my God, please stop,’” she said in London as she prepared to finish the “Rosenkavalier” run there. “Or, ‘I heard her when.’”

I don't know if this man has a spectacular gift or is a very unusual curiosity, but his falsetto voice is uncanny and his chest voice is excellent as well —

Leon Patillo sings both parts of "The Prayer."

Here's one I think I referenced a few pages back, when we were talking about Chet Baker, "Concerto de Aranjuez," Adagio Movement (2nd) by a fine group of jazz greats. The original piece from which this is derived is a guitar masterpiece, yet this jazz version is equally compelling as the instrumentalists swap riffs on a 1975 album.

    Jim Hall, guitar
    Chet Baker, trumpet
    Paul Desmond, sax
    Roland Hanna, piano
    Steve Gadd, drums
    Ron Carter, double-bass

Excellent---and fit perfectly for Easter Sunday morning

    Added in edit:

And from there I ended up here---not a bad place to be with Joni Mitchell.

As I hide from the madness of mid-town (Mr. Trump arrived about an hour ago) this is providing a soothing blanket of redemptive pleasure.

They eventually decided by the process of elimination that I had acquired a virus in my inner ear and despite treating me with steroids to reduce swelling there was no effect. I did get my first "ride" in an MRI device while they looked for a brain tumor that didn't exist. In any event, I have had some minimal recovery. At first I could "feel" sound, then actually hear something but could not hear tone or even begin to understand words. I use ear buds to test on a weekly basis my change and very very slowly it seems to be improving, more so in the lower frequencies. I give myself a weekly hearing test on line.

Strangely, listening to music on speakers is impacted only by a lack of separation. Using head phones seems almost normal but when using ear buds there is simply a "dead side". One of the more annoying things is to be driving and have someone in the passenger's seat---it seems I have to continually ask them to speak up since I can't hear them.

It sounds as if I am complaining---I am not, at my age I think I am doing pretty well----I can still turn the other ear
I am concerned for my friend who obviously enjoys music greatly. My son has hearing issues in one ear probably from damage from too loud music at rock concerts in his youth. I read about the ear phones/in-ear buds made by a new manufacturer whose products (Even Headphones) feature a system that runs a short hearing test for each ear and compensates for deficiencies/differences to a certain extent in each separate ear piece. If your hearing in your poor ear is not too damaged, this system may help.

I gave my son a pair of the over the ear phones and he says they help. I tried them and found the compensated sound was very good for this price point. One caveat: the cups are rather small and might not fit comfortably for people with big ears. Another complaint was that this first product issue cannot save programming for multiple users. Every new or subsequent user must reprogram the device. They cost $175 for the phones, less for the buds.

    Thank you for your concern!

I did the demo with obvious improvement in the quality of the sound. I am going to hold off doing anything until my next appointment with the specialist. He previously told me that the only option I had was a pair of hearing aids, one in my "dead" ear which would transmit to the one in my working ear. However, at that point I had zero hearing in my dead ear, that is no longer the case. The best way I could explain what I now have is to liken it to a cheap speaker that overdrives very quickly. That is the quality of what I hear, a broad band of frequencies are "chopped". The imbalance was obvious on the test "circle".

I am hoping that there will be some sort of device that will improve that and the short drive of that demo reinforces that hope. Listening to music in mono is still enjoyable---but a ride on the stereo side would certainly be fantastic!

Thank you---and if I find out who peed in my friends Wheaties I'll take care of them for you

Gotta hope for continued improvement in further defiance of the "expert's" guesses.

This one surprised me — I Do It For Your Love by Paul Simon & Herbie Hancock. It surprised me because I never thought of Paul Simon, the great music writer, as a fine singer too. His voice is just not a good instrument, but in this tune he overcomes that limitation well.

Incidentally, the Hancock album from which this is taken is excellent. It features his gifted piano and arraignment skills with a wide variety of artists sitting in. Can't remember the name of the album right now though.

From de Album, "Herbie Hancock ‎-- Possibilities"2005

I think what makes this stand out is that so much of his music has a "signature" cadence and sound--- like Kenny G---and this piece departs from that and allows his voice to come through.

Sound in large venues is crap, right, not like what the artists are getting through the things in their ears? Look for this soon at your venues — an app for the phones of the audience that transmits the mix straight from the artists' mixing board to the cellphone and the headphones/earbuds in the audience. Sounds so perfect, why didn't someone think of this before?

When I pointed the article above out to my daughter, who works security at multiple venues, she quickly pointed out that nearly all the acts will not allow streaming because that is an opportunity to record the concert. She works the security control booth and they will allow the video to her screens, but no audio. That would seem to be a real issue, and I don't recall that being addressed in the article.

She said Incubus is coming to one of her concerts next month, and she will check out what they are doing.

Very interesting. I have to think there is a way within the technology that can make it both limited distribution and not repeatable.
