Willie Nelson has grown to be a legend in the music industry, but when I first knew of him, he was the guy who came down the road a bit from his hometown of Abbott, Tx about 30 miles north of Waco. He often played in little dives in a tiny area between Waco and Belmead, which was known as "No Man's Land" because it was not incorporated as a municipality and had no local police force giving rise to a slough of cinder-block clubs/joints playing blues and country music and doing lord knows what else. The husks are still there as many of the artists, both blues and country, who played there are cherished names in music. It was said, "You can get anything you want there." At that time in the 50's & 60's, Willie was billed as "Little Willie Nelson" no doubt because of his diminutive stature, not his song writing talent, for which he was known at the time, and I saw his name on the marque several times that way just driving by to get to the BBQ joints in the area.

Sad to say, my crowd in high school at the time shied away from country music in deference to the newer teenage stuff although could not help being inundated with it in our Texas location. For that reason, and we were too young for the rowdy dives of No Man's Land anyway, I never saw Willie live then. I've enjoyed him live several times since though. He can be great and he can be poor (especially when he lapses into that annoying way he sometimes has of talking the lyrics instead of singing them), but he is bigger than life without question. Who would have ever dreamed that nasally voice would be such a hit?

It was interesting to note that on the 1962 video he was not appearing with the ubiquitous beat-up guitar with the holes chewed in it and the raggedy tone matching his raggedy voice he is never seen without on stage the last umpteen years. The thing had to have come from J.C. Penny.

    On edit:

Looks like I was wrong on the pedigree of Willie's guitar, "Trigger." It is a Martin...and how he gets such a frail tone out of a Martin must be a story untold...

More edit: here's a better history of "Trigger" and its impact on Willie's music. Willie's story of where he got the guitar seems to change from time to time, but he's getting "up there," so maybe he is mixing up his facts like us seniors tend to do, then again, the first cite is from a stoner magazine and maybe Willie was sampling his own product while giving the interview —

Dan's "veterans" thread reminded me of a group I first heard on the jukeboxes of the gasthausen of West Germany 50 or so years ago...At the risk of invoking an evil spirit long banished from our presence, I'll post this video which contains most of the songs I liked best...I didn't care for their later sounds, but I always enjoyed these......Ben

    Very nice

I still listen to the Lone Ranger on Classic Radio while driving. I never would have imagined Glenn Campbell playing that piece with a symphony orchestra---excellent

That of course is the William Tell Overture from Gioachino Rossini opera Guillaume Tell, the last of his 39 operas written in the early 1800's. If anyone thinks the tempo of Glenn Campbell's performance was increased from the norm---here is another recording---there was no such fiddling around as it were.

BTW---I'm not running around in possession of all those obscure facts---I fact checked them on Wikipedia

For a few more fast pieces that will get you moving:

Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4, 4th mvmt and Vivaldi's The Four Seasons Summer Presto. Even if you have no ear for classical music you might enjoy wathcing Anne-Sophie Mutter.

Did you venture into listening to any other performances of the group? I am not sure what genre Disturbed is in...maybe the Shouting Lunatic genre. Anyway, I think this tune is an aboration for them and that the lead disturbed guy can really sing is a surprise. For the rest of what I heard from him, I think the piercings are a metaphor for his screaming style.

BTW, I listened to some of the tunes that came up on the right side of the YouTube screen, one of which was another The Sound Of Silence and another artist with which I am not familiar is as good or better than the Disturbed guy. Take a listen, but perhaps the video is too much a drag and you might want to close your eyes because of the disconnect. Her name is Nouela.

Listening to Nouela's version as I type...I'm not sure I've ever heard a version of this song I didn't like...It was usually playing on someone's stereo in whatever barracks I was in...No, I have not heard anything else by Disturbed, I'll look for something later for comparison......Ben

The Sound Of Silence is a wonderful song by a brilliant writer. Paul Simon has such a way with his lyrics and his melodies can be quite intricate. Bridge Over Troubled Waters has some profound key and tempo changes that catch me very time even though I've heard it hundreds of times over fifty years.

I've seen some lists of top pop songs recently which have The Sound Of Silence high up in the top ten of all songs. Matter of taste, of course.

Still lovin' YouTube for access to these great performances and many I would never otherwise hear. The list on the right of the page can send you branching off to who-knows-where for hours, if you like music like I do. Yesterday, for instance, I started with Disturbed and ended up with Eric Clapton. How does that happen?
