True, Dave, but small change next to other corruption. I imagine we all have out favorites from the plethora of corrupt practises among the political class. My favorite is Wall Street and free money tossed their way by The Fed, which they then daisy-chain back to the pols who then nominate Fed members who keep the money flowing. Round & round the carrousel goes 'til no one knows when it stops.

An Iowa politician answers:
The price of corn is below it's 5 year low and is below the cost of production in many areas. How can you say that ethanol is causing increased prices today? This article is poorly researched on several counts.
Ethanol was introduced to replace MTBE as an oxidant to get NOx out of the air. NOx is the primary creator of smog, and California air is the prime beneficiary of ethanol's cleaning power. MTBE was largely replaced because it caused ground water pollution and is also carcinogenic. Kill clean burning ethanol and you go back to the cancer game no matter which ethanol substitute you use.
Ethanol produces 2.3 btu's for every btu of oil used in production. This does help us with energy independence.
Ethanol is particularly effective in knocking out micro-particulates in the air. It is so effective that several state chapters of the American Lung Association have endorsed E-85 blended fuel, which contains a minimum of 70% ethanol.
Ethanol only uses the starch of the corn plant. The distilling process leaves vegetable protein plus minerals that is used in animal feed. It is preferred by cattle over plain corn and has caused an increase in cattle production in Iowa. This animal feed co-product of ethanol is a big reason that ethanol is economically feasible.
Finally, my personal experience: I fuel my 1997 Jeep with ethanol. I now have 340K miles on it with no problems that could remotely be connected to the use of ethanol. For me, and for the nation, ethanol wins!!!

Political BS
Never pull your head out when you can come up with a good story
The most recent numbers I have are Jan. 2015 and the total is still 89.3 million head. That dry spell you boys had in TX took out a lot of cattle---and butchered cattle don't eat much corn. The total number of cattle and calves in the U.S. on January 1, 2013, was 89.3 million head, down 1.6% from 2012 and 7.5% lower than at the last cyclical peak in 2007. This is the smallest January cattle inventory since 1952. Calf Crop.

I question why anyone would not go to the original source rather than getting the report pre-digested and regurgitated. However, that said, there are varying opinions on the accuracy of the EPA/Pruitt report.
Listen to the tape interview contained in that link---Pruitt is (was) a first class swamp dweller.

When it comes to policies directly affecting farmers, there are very few pols not in that swamp.
The market should set the volume needed, not government edict. If it did, there would be near zero of the crap produced for vehicles.
This idiocy was one of the chief reasons I favored Cruz in 2016.

Trump has in the past voiced his politician approach to this issue by supporting the rules forcing continued ethanol being used in the formulation of most gasoline sold in this country. This has been a nauseating pander in my view as stated above. The issue has resurfaced lately as the EPA has threatened to hold hearings on changing the rules and allow waivers for some refiners. The refiners and the farmers are at each other’s throats and politicians are caught in the middle. We know that such rules (look above) are 100% a political choice, and somebody is going to loose, not the least of whom would be the consumers who are forced to buy this crap at an inflated price.
Trump is the final point in the squeeze, so which way would he go?

Trump is further caught on the horns of the ethanol political dilemma —
https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-us...-idUKKCN1VC1RN
He, like almost all his contemporaries, has pandered to farmers lending his past support to vast subsidies in the form of mandates for food to be used in our fuel. This is bulls#$t and everyone knows it, including him. Last week, Trump ok’d approval of some relaxing of the mandates, and now the phony ethanol industry is squawking. How do you split the baby?

He already disproved your theory, Dave, when he did the right thing and approved the exceptions last week for refiners and pissed-off his farmer base. Now he is suffering the consequences.

Because he did something last week has no influence on what he does this week---let someone whisper in his ear that there are more dimes on the other side of the street and and he will be gone-----he isn't constrained by principles.
