There is another Fort Drum located in upstate NY named after Lieutenant General Hugh A. Drum.
Many NG units do their annual training there. That training is of high priority in the event of another instance of southern regression

No need to do that---just leave em in there---good feed for the gators and skeeters

If I remember correctly, River Rat mentioned spending time at the NY location during mountain training. I also seem to remember him not liking the weather too much.

I think you are right. Fort Drum is also the home of the 10th Mountain Division.
There is no question that the weather can get pretty brutal up there.
It is also close to some of the best salmon and steel head fishing in the lower 48.

One of my nephews was stationed at Ft. Drum. Made his trip to Somalia from there. He finally saw the light and signed up for tank school.

Fascinating, not the least of which were the innovations leading to deep diving at 400 feet to repeatedly attach and retrieve the devices in the 70's. As a diver, that amazes me and that no divers were mentioned as being lost is truly surprising.
There has to be a movie out of Operation Ivy Bells sometime.

Below is a piece outlining the opposing batteries in Calais and Dover during WWII. I had missed this bit of history giving no thought that the Straights Of Dover allowed cannon fire to reach the other side of the 21 mile straight. The measurement given of the Nazi guns are in millimeters and for clarification for those, like myself, who need it, 400 millimeters equate to 15 3/4 inch guns.
