The birth of the Pontiac Aztec...

Actual secretly recorded conference in the Pontiac design executive lounge...Really it is...
Pontiac Exec 1: “Alright, they didn’t love your Aztek concept car. Apparently, all of the little camping extras didn’t thrill drivers”

Pontiac Exec 2: “But we’re targeting campers, not drivers, campers will love it. Campers want room and a vehicle that makes their lives easier.”

Exec 1: “I guess that sort of makes sense”

Exec 2: “It makes more than sense, it makes camping sense! It’s an SUV and all campers want to drive an SUV.”

Exec 1: “Alright, but they really didn’t like the design. Like every aspect of the design was hit pretty hard. The weird semi sloping part of the rear end was easily the most hated and that hideous front hood was turned into a joke in every review.

Exec 2: “But that’s the best part, see, the back part will come out and works as a tent! So campers can have a tent without having to bring one!”

Exec 1: “Don’t all campers already own tents? Often great tents that cost them a lot of money?”

Exec 2: “But not a tent that’s actually a part of their car!”

Exec 1: “You know what, you’ve completely swayed me. Let’s just put this concept straight into production and watch the sales come in!”

Exec 2: “I’m glad you saw it my way, want to go do some more cocaine?”

Exec 1: “Just a little. We have to keep things professional.”

I remember going to the car show in Houston the year that abomination was introduced and seeing it ar the Pontiac display. I have never been to one of those where the attendees were laughing at the product openly, loudly voicing ridicule and the models presenting the thing were looking very embarrassed just being there. That thing was the beginning of the demise of a storied mark in my view.

What a beauty, we seem to forget the beautiful cars of the past. They spent a lot of time creating style and grace. Autos made a statement as to who you were and where you were going. Now days they just try to make them all look alike, except the exotics which nobody can afford.

That's probably why I try to turn everything I drive into something more personal...Cookie cutter cars are for other people...I like to be a little more distinctive......Ben

That thing made such an impression on me that I still remember the intersection I was in the first time I saw one

Pontiac missed where Honda later took up the cudgel and excelled with the late lamented Element, and no cocain was involved...at least with the makers.

Here is one great little vehicle that has left us and is sorely missed. Never understood why they stopped.

They only stopped sales of the RHD.... I have a buddy with one. Fun truck but would not want it as a daily driver.

that had nothing on the original FJ40 which just begged to be abused in the dirt. I wish I had never sold my 72

The visibility out of the FJ Cruiser is dreadfully narrow.

The FJ40 was a wonderful vehicle off road, but it would beat you to death on the road. Sure wish I still had one.
