We are on the eastern edge, the center of the elk herd is about 40 miles west of us. We do have an elk hunting season in PA. We have to enter a drawing to get a tag.
The reintroduction started in 1913 and continued until 1926. The herd is stabilized at about 700 to 800 animals over a range of almost 4000 sq miles.

I like elk as well, but of all the things that I have hunted, the most enjoyable to me is moose. In a blind taste test, most people would think they are eating excellent beef.

Because the side by side is to tall? Is the area where the door is on a slab?Then i got a side by side and my "door" (its a steel reinforced hole in concrete - permanent) is 6" too short.

The footings are deep and there are solid 6" concrete walls about 10' tall on that side so picture kind of a low window with a ramp on the inside. Plus i framed the door in back to back 3" angles welded together because i dont like cracked concrete.Originally Posted by mgrist

Ok a couple more. The one kind of shows the off grid aspect. Solar is a couple hundred feet to the right of the cabin in this view. Not much fire danger because green aspens dont burn very well, but i still get nervous when fires are nearby. I worry lots more about snow tearing stuff up. The solar can be sketchy over the cold dark winter. In about a month i get to find out what got torn up this year.
The other one is when i started calling it the "cabin". Hickory cabinets off the charts on the "rustic" scale. I guess some people dont like grain.

What I've been getting at: On a house you basically have a 94" give or take opening. You shove a 2x12 header cap it with a 2x4 and your 80" door needs no more framing. I have more than once needed more than 82 1/2 for a prehung door. What I did was cut the header out and make one that ties in with the floor joists which gave me 94 1/2" satisfied code etc... I don't know what you've got but I figured I throw that out there. Building is about the only thing my mind retains anymore. I guess if you do something for 50 years a little ole accident isn't going to take it away, all of it anyway.

Heres the door when it was just a hole. its framed with angle iron so the hinges are welded on. The basement would make a good bunker.
