    For all us DD fans...

This means you, Dave...The uploader here says this is the rarest of the rare Detroit Diesels, the 1-71 produced for a couple of years in the late 1930's...With less than 1000 built, off the shelf parts are non-existent, so improvisation becomes the watchword...Watch as he buys this one sight unseen, and proceeds to find out if it will even run...A word of warning - his language is occasionally reminiscent of my own when I did such things for a living......Ben

I skipped ahead to see if he could get it to run and was impressed when he succeeded.

It's even more impressive when you see what horrors he had to undo, then re-manufacture from scratch...And apparently a lot more to come......Ben

I am about half way through. I am amazed at how clean the inside of that engine is. My guess is that it has very low hours on it.

    Very nice

I never saw a 1-71, I did see a 2-71 which was running a line shaft drive in a local saw mill. The main saw and carriage was powered by a 6-71. The 2-71, with flat belt drives, drove the sawdust conveyors, a big gang rip saw, and cut off saws.

    All good stuff---thanks Ben
